Joey Evans is a scheming-but-sweet performer who comes to Chicago with dreams of starting his own nightclub in Roundabout's revival of Rodgers and Hart's romantic comedy, Pal Joey. Playwright Richard Greenberg's (Take Me Out) new book preserves the hard-boiled noir dialogue that makes the somewhat-predictable story (guy meets girl, guy leaves girl for "sugar mama," guy realizes the errors of his ways, guy and girl live happily-ever-after) a whole lot of fun. One highlight is the parade of chorus girls in the kitschy "The Flower Garden of My Heart," but Stockard Channing steals the show as the older seductress who falls for Joey. She sings the show's best number, jazz standard "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered."
