Robert Ashley, creator of sprawling avant-garde operas, is also responsible for Music With Roots in the Aether, the world's first "opera for television." Comprised of both interviews and performance footage, the piece documents the work of Ashley's peers, including Philip Glass and Terry Riley, who characterized the post-Cage movement in classical music of the '60s and '70s. But, as the title of the work suggests, Ashley's goals are more theoretical than documentary — exploring the roots of modern classical music through the medium of film. MoMA stages the epic seven-part, 14-hour piece over the course of the next two weeks.
