Greek-born choreographer Andonis Foniadakis' piece for Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève was one of the most exhilarating works seen on the Joyce stage last year, and now the prolific artist is back with his own showcase at Joyce's smaller Soho stage. His one-woman Rite of Spring is based on an evening-length work he created for the Swiss company last year, set to Stravinsky's well-known score. As danced by Ioanna Toumpakari, this solo version examines the female body as it moves from the ordinary to the ecstatic, carrying sexual and unseen internal forces. The stark contrast between the soloist and the power-packed score sparks the violent eroticism of an unexpected spring awakening.
