Film Forum pays tribute to 1930's funny lady Carole Lombard, underrated and often eclipsed by her on-screen male co-stars and off-screen romances, in typical early-Hollywood fashion. Credited with almost 80 films throughout the course of her short career, she struggled to exhibit her comic genius in a male-dominated industry, before her untimely death in 1942. The festival gets off to a rollicking start with a double feature of My Man Godfrey (1936) and Twentieth Century (1934). The latter co-stars the iconic John Barrymore as a theatre star who enlists his former protégé, played by Lombard, to help resurrect his waning career, getting more than he bargained for in the process. Her turn in Hitchcock's Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941) is another highlight.
