Somber and episodic, the Dutch film Stages pays such serious homage to Bergman that it very well could have taken "Scenes from a Divorce" as its English title. Martin and Roos have already divorced, but they remain utterly attached and still meet regularly, albeit in "neutral" spaces like restaurants. The reason, ostensibly, is their 17-year-old son Isaac, who is as silent and stricken as the two are awash in idle chatter. Writer/director Mijke de Jong made the brave decision to allow her premise to serve as the mere starting-point for her actors to improvise upon. The result is a painstaking indictment of the impact of narcissism on family legacies.
