New Yorkers in need of a psychedelic-funk fix tend to hit the vinyl more often than the clubs. Not so tonight, as UK upstarts the Heavy return Stateside to preach from the Funkadelic gospel. Throbbing horns, walloping low-end, and a charismatic frontman with Curtis-worshipping pipes make the band's debut album, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, a must-listen for soul-starved rockers. The confusingly named Pennsylvanian quartet Illinois open with a set of moody, rhythmic indie rock.
