BAM's New Wave Festival brings back one of France's most daring companies for another intersection of modern dance with physical theatre and stunning athleticism. Compagnie 111's latest work, Les Sept Planches de la Ruse (The Seven Boards of Skill) is inspired by tangram, an ancient Chinese geometric puzzle composed of seven tiles that can be manipulated in a nearly infinite number of combinations. Guided by director Aurélien Bory's dreamlike imagination, an age-diverse (18 to 59) cast of 14 Chinese dancers and acrobats, formerly of the Peking Opera, separates and re-assembles seven larger-than-life interlocking shapes in this inventive nouveau cirque work.
