Derrick May, along with high-school pals Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, basically invented techno back in the late-'80s, releasing seminal tracks like "Strings of Life," which fuses elements of Chicago house with his Detroit roots into a uniquely twisted version of future-soul. While his recorded output has slowed some in recent years, his DJ sets still stun, remaining as innovative and vital as ever. His second-wave disciples Kenny Larkin and Stacey Pullen join May tonight on Cielo's fantastic Funktion One sound system.
