MoMA presents this special screening of The Times of Harvey Milk in anticipation of Gus van Sant's new biopic Milk. As America's first openly gay public official, Milk rocked both the conservative and existing gay political establishment by refusing to stand down, instead working to establish an uncompromising gay-rights ordinance in San Francisco. Rob Epstein's doc uses news footage, personal accounts, and narration to recount Milk's rise from camera-store owner to San Francisco city supervisor and his eventual assination alongside SF Mayor George Moscone at the hand of Dan White, a jealous former city supervisor who wanted his job back. Epstein's film is a stark reminder of both how far we've come and how far we have yet to go.
