Bassnectar's music contains a microcosm of Bay Area subcultures: from wax-poetic hip-hop beats and massive bass lines worthy of the playa's space-tribe raves, to loose song structures that could've been spun from a jam band's all-nighter. Bassnectar doesn't cross these genres so much as compact them into explosive dance-floor powder kegs. Maybe that's why he's routinely been voted Best DJ by SF weeklies while still claiming "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as his defining musical experience.
