Note: The matinee on Saturday, November 22 is part of The Met: Live in HD series, shown in movie theatres across the tri-state area, including BAM.
Hector Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust (The Damnation of Faust) is usually performed in concert halls, where one's imagination is free to run as wild as the music. However, the Met is again (!) shaking up the classical music "norm" by giving this sensuous work a full staging. Director Robert Lepage is incorporating his signature video designs and projections to tell Dr. Faust's unhappy tale. Lepage is making his Met debut, but Berlioz is a longtime specialty of both the Met Orchestra and its Music Director James Levine. The casting of mezzo Susan Graham as Marguerite, tenor Marcello Giordani as Faust, and bass-baritone John Relyea as Méphistophélès is as good — and evil — as can be imagined.
