Brooklyn's the Hold Steady have come a long way from their roots in legendary Minneapolis indie-rock outfit LFTR PLLR. The self-declared bar band is still riding high on Stay Positive, yet another critically acclaimed release rife with classic-rock riffs and tales of the young and reckless. While he doesn't so much sing as speak, frontman Craig Finn manages to masterfully catalog the thrills of life after early innocence is lost. The backing band, meanwhile, is less interested in breaking the mold than capturing the spirit of old-school rock 'n roll.
