Mesh corsets, hot-pink tulle, strobe lights, silent-film facial contortions, and a Sugar Plum Fairy who dispenses cocaine from her cleavage: this isn't the PBS Nutcracker you surf past every year — this one's Rated R. Angela Harriell's choreography and direction and David F. Slone's story turn the classic holiday ballet into a rowdy, risqué burlesque. This Clara lives in contemporary New York City rather than 19th-century Germany, and her gritty, '80s Christmas Eve dream reveals family secrets requisite for her entrée into adulthood. Additionally, this re-envisioning is all soundtracked by Tchaikovsky/techno mashups.
