Kelly Reichardt returns to Oregon — the setting of her critically acclaimed Old Joy (2006) — with Wendy and Lucy, the heartbreaking story of a displaced young woman (Michelle Williams) making her way cross-country to Alaska with her only friend, her pooch, Lucy. Wendy's plan to find work starts to crumble when car trouble strands the pair in Portland. Williams' brilliant, emotionally suppressed performance lends her role a simmering intensity, while her character's ongoing struggles with poverty and unemployment make the film painfully relevant during our current "Great Recession."
