Using ephemeral, everyday sheets of paper, Danish artist Peter Callesen realizes magical 3-D sculpture installations. His first solo US show, this tight exhibition centers on a life-size paper cut-out sculpture, Human Ruin, which constructs a lifeless human figure from rising paper walls of a temple-like nature, defined by arching cathedral windows and ancient, Holy Wall-like decay. Callesen touches on weighty ideas of life and death, opposing concepts of reality and fairy-tale, and positive vs. negative space — all with a touch of the fanciful wonder found in children's pop-up books and an inimitable sense of quirky Scandinavian craftsmanship.
