While using a name that the FCC wouldn't allow broadcasters to utter on air worked for a while, Butthole Surfers couldn't avoid mainstream attention indefinitely. After antagonizing crowds for almost 15 years, they inadvertently stormed the radio scene with 1996's "Pepper." Flukes aside, the band's sound is pure sludge-punk, channeling everything from Ozzy Osbourne to surf music and avant-garde experimentation, all framed with a "suck-this" attitude. NYC-bred Paw Tracks act Black Dice were sewn from the same cloth, recently developing from a strict noise act into an electronic oddity pushing the bounds of skewed dance-floor anthemry.
