Fans of flash mobs and minimalist music will want to come out for this year's Unsilent Night. Experimental composer Phil Kline inaugurated the tradition in 1992, inviting New Yorkers to bring out their boom boxes and take part in massive, orchestrated versions of Christmas carols — seasonal harmonies become expansive sound-spheres shot through with Terry Riley-esque shimmer and Steve Reich-ian pulses. After 16 years of performances all over the world and a recording on Bang on a Can's Cantaloupe label, Kline's events now draw crowds of hundreds. Caroling has never been so epic.
