That The Secret of the Grain scored big at the French box office attests not only to the (typically) impeccable taste of that viewing public, but also to the infectious energy of this film. Sixtysomething North African immigrant Slimane (Habib Boufares) has been working in the shipyards of his small French port town for 35 years. If he's ever going to realize his dream of opening a couscous restaurant, it's got to be now — and somehow he motivates himself and his fierce, scattered family to try. This film may not be much to look at, but its pacing, smarts, and deep humility engage as few other films have recently, on either side of the ocean.
