Let it never be said that Theater of War does not cover serious ground: the documentary is about war, the power of theatre to effect social change, the process of putting a play together — Meryl Streep's process in particular — the history of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and her Children, and the history of Brecht's career before and after his flight from Nazi Germany. Frankly, if it weren't for the fact that all the ground it covers proves compelling, this might be dismissed as an everything-but-the-sink sprawl. Of particular interest is the footage of Brecht's playing dumb when testifying in front of 1947 House Un-American Activities Committee.
