The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, director David Fincher's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man born in 1918 who is saddled with the body of an 80-something and ages backward, seems an oddly fairytale-like (even Forrest Gump-y) venture for the director responsible for such grim fare as Se7en and Fight Club. The resulting warm-hearted epic film (167 minutes!) sidesteps sentimentality, however, by focusing on the philosophical implications of human time, not to mention the phrase "youth is wasted on the young." As lifelong friends and lovers Benjamin and Daisy, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett demonstrate a chemistry all the more powerful for its restraint.
