There was a time when the idea of combining hardcore punk with metal seemed like a wacky one, which is perhaps why the Cro-Mags never got as big as some of their contemporaries. Though it spawned a rash of knuckle-dragging straight-edge outfits (108, Shelter, Judge) in the '90s, the NYC band's logo made it onto the denim jackets of many a crusty street punk back in the day, probably due to its snotty, Bad Brains-inspired thrash. These days, frontman John Joseph, still a devout follower of Hare Krishna, is the only original member left, but the band remains as crushing as ever, proving that you don't need beer to be a meathead.
