Before the Velvet Underground became rock 'n roll legends — hell, before they had even released a record — Andy Warhol commissioned them to act as his in-house band, performing as part of his infamous Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia show. The Velvet Underground features one the band's rehearsals for that show at Warhol's Factory. The whole gang is there, appearing stoic and focused throughout the improvised jam. Nico's son, Ari, even gets in on the action with the maracas. And at the film's end, the NYPD bursts in, presumably responding to a noise complaint. While no visual masterpiece, Warhol's film provides a rare glimpse of the Velvets defining their sound before unleashing their chaotic assault on the public's ears.
