Function over form was repeated like a mantra in 21st-century architecture, but the new millennium saw form follow finance in a gaudy architecture of excess — projects like the traveling Chanel Pavillion, Dubai's Dynamic Tower, and all of Beijing's Olympic dressings. Now, with "wow" architecture on the outs and recession-era utility the newest wrinkle, what better time to reappraise the science's aesthetic qualifications?
