Note:
Dr. Templeton signs copies of her book following the lecture.
Author and academic Dr. Joan Templeton presents the discoveries behind her latest book, Munch's Ibsen, which traces the influence of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen on his fellow countryman, expressionist painter Edvard Munch. Munch's iconic image, The Scream (1893), is in many ways a reaction to the moralistic and hypocritical society Ibsen so thoroughly skewers — a silent expression of existential torment at the end of the Victorian era. However, Munch's connection to Ibsen runs much deeper: the painter created more than 400 illustrations of Ibsen's plays. Tonight, Dr. Templeton discusses some of her favorite examples, while illuminating the literary obsession she shares with the melancholic Munch.
