Zadie Smith
Friday Dec 5, 2008 (7pm)
$15
Acclaimed British novelist Zadie Smith hops the pond to deliver the annual Robert B. Silvers Lecture at the New York Public Library's lion-flanked headquarters. Smith will touch on the development and implications of different speaking styles, tracing the subtleties of register, tone, and vocabulary that shape our public and private discourse. The child of a Jamaican mother and an English father, Smith grew up in working-class north London, then graduated from Cambridge and went on to experience international success. Much of her work engages these shifting worlds of race and class that have marked her as a perpetual outsider. Tonight, expect digressions on topics as wide-ranging as hip-hop, cooking, Barack Obama, academia, and Shakespeare.
