Slava Polunin's style of pantomime, which he calls "Expressive Idiotism," is on display at the revived Slava's Snowshow. When he first enters the stage, shuffling in a slow-motion style reminiscent of Japanese Kabuki theatre, he's dragging a rope with a noose on the end, and you might worry you're in for depressing Beckettian antics. But then, Polunin's joined by numerous other clowns of all shapes, sizes, and ages, before embarking on a surreal, inexplicable quest while the viewer is lovingly pummeled by pseudo-snow, bubbles, wind, and a brilliant feast of images. Influenced by Leonid Engibarov, Marcel Marceau, and Charlie Chaplin, Polunin orchestrates a sublime and visceral experience for all.
