Billy Claven dreams of leaving Inishmaan for Hollywood when director Robert Flaherty arrives on a neighboring island to shoot his new film, Man of Aran. Orphaned at birth when his parents mysteriously drowned, Cripple Billy — as the villagers call him — leads a solitary life escaping into his books and secretly lusting after Helen, an aggressively cute lass who frequents the general store owned by Billy's aunts. The masterful dark humor of playwright Martin McDonagh (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) falls somewhere between the Coen brothers and Samuel Beckett, and frequent collaborator Garry Hynes' macabre production doesn't ignore the characters' humanity.
