In Carmen Peláez's one-woman show Rum & Coke, the protagonist begins a search for beauty and a forgotten Cuba after finding her great-aunt Amelia Peláez's paintings. A portrait of the diaspora begins to appear, as the women in Peláez's life — her fiery grandmother, her club-hopping friend, and the santera she visits for blessings — tell their stories. Returning to her roots in the motherland, she witnesses the thankless struggle of street life and black-market bargaining of modern Cuba.
