Barnes & Noble says…

Before the opening of Anne Enright's The Gathering, a drunk named Liam Hegarty walks to the cliffs of Brighton with stones stuffed in his pants, and pitches forward into the ocean. Liam's sister Veronica tells the rest of the story, a swell of memories brought on by her brother's funeral in Dublin. The portrait of Liam through his sister's eyes is piecemeal and preciously detailed. He loved bleach-white animal bones, and never once wore dirty underwear. As Veronica dredges her childhood in the wake of Liam's suicide, three generations of Hegartys open up with all the frayed edges and evocative imagery of a worn family photo.
