Harold and Maude became a cult classic long before DVDs made it easy to achieve such status. Directed by the late, great Hal Ashby, it channels the same off-kilter emotionality and poker-faced charm as his later works Shampoo (1975) and Being There (1979), but without those pictures' sprawl. Each frame of this love story between a death-obsessed young man and a spark plug of a septuagenarian (spry-limbed, crowing Ruth Gordon) plays out perfectly against yawning skies, oppressively opulent interiors, and a Cat Stevens soundtrack. (Perhaps the only time that singer/songwriter's charm will ever prove inarguable.) Director Jonathan Demme, no stranger to cult status himself, introduces the film.
