Belgian painter Luc Tuymans makes every effort to stymie easy interpretation of his blurry, photo-derived paintings. A history painter in a media-saturated era, he's tackled the Belgian colonial endeavors in the Congo, the Holocaust, and the Iraq war. In 16 new paintings and drawings at David Zwirner, Tuymans turns his attention to Disney's legacy, examining how the animation studio grew into a family-oriented media giant with quasi-utopian ambitions. Tuymans unearths old portraits of Walt Disney and blueprints for the futuristic EPCOT center, which, when rendered in Tuymans' muted palette and pushed to the verge of abstraction, contrast Disney's cheerful twin obsessions: "magic," and keeping his workers' labor hidden from view.
