Art Nayland Blake: What the Whiskey Said, What the Sun Is Saying

For many years, Nayland Blake's surrogate was a big white bunny that showed up in his drawings and sculptures. But in his new pieces at Matthew Marks, Blake shows a more pensive side. Dailies is a minimal, mournful group of 30 drawings made during one month. The ten new sculptures on view are similarly personal, made with materials gathered on Blake's daily walks. In their abstract language, Blake's sculptures recall Joseph Beuys' self-mythologizing endeavors, without the pedantic messages. A kinder, gentler expressionist, Blake probes the relationship between personal vision and formal innovation.
