Though The Battleship Potemkin has long been considered a cinematic masterpiece, Sergei Eisenstein's dramatic retelling of the historic uprising at sea is also infamous for its musical shape-shifting. Since its premiere in 1925, the silent film's original, organ-heavy score has been variously revised by Edmund Meisel's repetitive salon orchestra, Dmitri Shostakovich's symphonies, and even a classical-meets-electro treatment courtesy of the Pet Shop Boys. Now, celebrity clarinetist David Krakauer and hip-hop geek Socalled — who previously linked instrumental arms in Krakauer's group Klezmer Madness! — add their own audio experimentalism to the movie's soundtrack history.
