Steven Holl is an international titan of contemporary architecture, but unlike some of his peers, he doesn't strive for celebrity. His designs are eccentric but not flashy, refined but not intimidating, and they cater to his artistic whim as well as the local context. His firm's recent proposal for Hudson Yards was refreshingly cohesive, echoing I.M. Pei's much-neglected Kips Bay towers on Manhattan's east side. Tonight at Cooper Union, Holl lectures on his practice's mercurial philosophy and its major projects nearing completion in China and Denmark. Closer to home (and worth a visit), Holl's luminous museum addition in Kansas City and a futuristic water purification plant in New Haven have secured his reputation for poetic pragmatism.
