Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park with George is a concept musical based on the beyond-famous Georges Seurat painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. A few elements are hokey (painted characters coming to life, Seurat's great-grandson as a sculptor also named Georges), but this modern production, directed by 32-year-old Broadway newbie Sam Buntrock, feels both fresh and spectacular. Buntrock's animated backgrounds bring Seurat's painting literally to life, and his direction adds a softness to the characters that sheds light on the inner workings of an artist's mind.
