In a Walden Pond-worthy gesture of self-mythology, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon receded to the Wisconsin woods in the winter of 2005 to exorcize personal ghosts and find new musical direction. As legend might dictate, he emerged with the gorgeous For Emma, Forever Ago, a plaintive document of lonely-guy travails adorned with monastic polyphony and a creaky country pulse. In support of the album's February release on Jagjaguwar, Vernon assembled a band, packed up some flannel, and set out on a national tour with terrestrial-sludge outfit Black Mountain.
