Soho's venerable Drawing Center hosts a broad range of 2-D works by LA-based sculptor Sterling Ruby in its Drawing Room project space. In addition to several of Ruby's large, site-specific pieces, the exhibition includes 50 works from throughout the past half-decade. As in his sculptures, Ruby juxtaposes modernism's purity and rigidity with life's contentious realities. He takes a range of approaches, combining spray-paint techniques with photographic collages; employing red and pink nail polish in a series of gestural abstractions; and, in more sculptural pieces, making use of bleached fabric.
