Directors Lucia Small and Ed Pincus cut their teeth on the old-school concept of documentaries: filmmaker as fly on the wall. As Northern liberals interviewing Southern Christians for a Hurricane Katrina doc, however, they soon ran up against their own biases. Rather than clinging to the pretense of objectivity, the two instead bit the bullet and put themselves in front of the camera, in the very un-Michael Moore capacity of filmmaker as anti-hero. Axe in the Attic, a series of conversations between Small, Pincus, volunteers, officials, and survivors, offers a fascinating meditation on the new Katrina diaspora, as well as the question of how to build empathy with people very removed from yourself.
