Film Loves of a Blonde (1965)

It's difficult to reconcile the giggling "Wolfie" of Milos Forman's Amadeus with the director's staid, cucumber-coolness in Loves of a Blonde. But BAM gives it a go with a two-week retrospective of the Czech director's work. Resembling paramours of the French New Wave, a young couple takes refuge from the stodgy adult world with bedsheets, cigarettes, and rolling eyes as their only weapons. This quirky vulnerability and and F-U 'tude set the standard for tough-as-tacks youths, followed up in indie films like Juno and Garden State. But Forman treats '60s-era Prague with a candid austerity that makes Page and Portman look baroque by comparison.
