Performing Arts: Theatre Passing Strange

The loose autobiography-in-song of one Mark Stewart (aka Stew), Passing Strange tells the story of a restless Youth (the excellent Daniel Breaker) who flees his comfortable Los Angeles home for Europe, seeking a more "real" existence. Strange is an unabashed rock musical; the vital band has pride of place onstage within the secular/sacred church of Stew, who narrates the life of the Youth, from hedonistic Amsterdam to bohemian Berlin, as he moves away from the women who move toward him. Riotous and erudite, Stew appropriates and tweaks musical genres from gospel to punk while showing us new ways to think about ourselves and our constructed identities.
