Chinese artist Cao Fei's RMB City is a virtual metropolis designed for the online world Second Life, and Lombard-Freid Gallery is exhibiting a scale model of the architectural junk heap — complete with orbiting ballistic missiles and flying panda. Viewers can explore the RMB City construction site via laptop, and sit on foam cubes for a screening of i.Mirror, a "documentary" about Fei's Second Life avatar, China Tracy. Lombard-Freid's space also serves as a leasing office for Fei's cyber real-estate venture. RMB City transcends Second Life's nerd appeal to explore the political and economic contradictions of contemporary China.
