A veteran of the Israeli army, choreographer Deganit Shemy spent four months in an intensive, all-female medical course — and this after living with a women's group on a kibbutz. No wonder she has so much to say about women, the communities they forge, and the reflections of themselves in others. In Iodine, Shemy explores female vulnerability within a social and personal context: five women stand together, struggling between their desire for intimacy and a fear of losing their personal identities. The dancers employ a series of freezes and falls with an emotional intensity that stings like the titular medicinal agent.
