African American photographer Carrie Mae Weems marks her return to New York with a mini-retrospective at Chelsea's Jack Shainman Gallery. Weems is predominately occupied with resurrecting the lost cultural history of African Americans and transforming the visual representation of black bodies. Whether created at home — as in her Kitchen Table and Sea Islands series — or abroad (she was a 2005 Rome Prize fellow) Weems' images are visually powerful and rich with cultural history and social commentary.
