Set in pre-revolutionary Russia, Cherubina follows the true tale of Elisa Ivanovna, a frustrated poetess and disabled schoolmarm. Ivanovna becomes convinced that the only way to gain literary recognition is by pretending to be a young, voluptuous woman named Cherubina. With the help of her friend Max, an editor at the Apollon, she strikes up a correspondence with the poet Nikolai, who falls for her trite but beautiful alter-ego, and becomes the toast of the literati. Driven by superficial naïveté and frustrated by the unrequited correspondence, Nikolai slowly falls into desperation, unaware that the woman he repeatedly snubs is the one he adores.
