Showcasing the young and the talented is Ensemble Studio Theatre's Thicker Than Water, a collection of one-acts from the company's ensemble of up-and-coming playwrights. Amazingly, of the seven short plays, five are quite good. It's unfortunate that one of the weakest links, Both, is also the longest (and the last) of the evening, but even this amateurish piece is filled with youthful humor and clever character portraits. Better are the handful of shorts, which are both entertaining and modestly affecting. The showcase is at its best with It'll Soon Be Here, a Clinton-era coming-of-age vignette that is at once familiar and strange.
