Maverick violinist/composer Leroy Jenkins (1932-2007) characterized his music as "American," having no use for what he viewed as the artificial constructs of classical and jazz. Neither genre would claim him; both were diminished by his death. After a comprehensive musical education encompassing divergent traditions (from gospel and blues to European modernism), Jenkins logged time with free-jazz icons Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman. This tribute features avant-garde all-star former collaborators: pianist Myra Melford, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith (whose association with Jenkins dates to the '60s), the Flux Quartet, and Lovely Music labelmate Thomas Buckner. The program combines Jenkins' compositions with pieces dedicated to his memory.
