Famous for his sensual photographs of flowers and notorious for his S&M images, Robert Mapplethorpe also took excellent portraits. Sean Kelly Gallery presents nearly 50 of Mapplethorpe's photographs depicting fellow artists in the downtown New York scene of the '70s and '80s. In his handsome, austere portraits, Mapplethorpe treats dealers Leo Castelli and Ileana Sonnabend and curator Henry Geldzahler as if they were heads of state. A wan Cindy Sherman wears a light double-breasted suit, matching her pale skin and hair. By contrast, conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth, dressed in black, appears to be in the middle of explaining an arcane point, while Susan Sontag looks as regal and determined as ever.
