While Norway's Hanne Hukkelberg is often cast as an expat inhabitant of the freak-folk forest, the singer spends plenty of time foraging through older foliage. Hukkelberg's as much a jazzbo as she is brethren to the bearded, layering her folk influences with avant-garde horn skronks, minimalist piano tinkerings, and vocal allusions to Björk and Billie Holiday. Her voice lilts with heart-wrenching reserve, as sparse indie orchestrations waver over accordions, bells, and synths. While her albums have a tendency toward twee lo-fi, her live shows are all brass — trading the polite reserve of the recordings for thick, all-encompassing atmospheres.
