Film The Housemaid (1960)

Kim Ki-young's films draw comparisons to those of Spanish surrealist Luis Buñuel, characterized as they are by an affinity for horror and an interest in female psychology. The Housemaid chronicles a young girl's predatorial obsession with her employer, an unwitting (and married) music teacher. The film's psychosexual tension combines the theatrics of a thriller and the angst of a melodrama, making for a dark and lustful story. The Housemaid is now screened as part of a 12-film Ki-young retrospective at the Walter Reade Theater.
