Subodh Gupta traverses painting, sculpture, and video with tightly thematic stories from Indian history, told in the dialect of household utensils and clichéd scenes of Indian life. In his second solo show at Jack Shainman Gallery, Gupta constructs the gigantic bust of a masked militant from pots and pans, similar to 2006's skull sculpture Very Hungry God. By evoking specters of death and violence with objects of domestic utility, Gupta examines how these concepts are formed in the collective unconscious of a nation. In 1 KG War, meanwhile, he presents a hexagonal piece of 24-carat gold in a jeweler's display case. The conceptual work gives literal form to the "cost of war" — it's precious, finite, and carefully guarded.
